What is a fractional CIO or IT Director?

A fractional CIO (or IT Director) is a senior technology leader who works with your organization part-time, giving you executive-level IT judgment and ownership without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. You get the strategy, governance, security oversight, and vendor management a full-time CIO would provide, scaled to what you actually need, often just a few days a month. It fits organizations that are too complex to run IT on instinct but not large enough to justify a full-time executive salary.

How is a fractional CIO different from a managed service provider (MSP)?

A fractional CIO leads your technology; an MSP runs it. An MSP handles day-to-day operations like help desk, patching, and infrastructure, and good ones do that well. A fractional CIO sits a level above: setting strategy, owning security and governance, holding vendors (including your MSP) accountable, and translating technology into terms your board and leadership can act on. Most organizations keep their MSP and add fractional leadership to direct it.

What does fractional IT leadership cost?

Fractional IT leadership costs a fraction of a full-time CIO salary because you only pay for the time you use.
